The Vine Line podcast is a new audio resource for grape growers and winemakers. It includes lectures and other technical presentations from across the California wine industry. The first series is produced by the Lake County Winegrape Commission in association with the UC Davis department of Viticulture and Enology. See episode descriptions below.

“GRN Rootstocks”

In this episode, Dr. Andrew Walker, a professor at the U.C. Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology will conclude this series with a discussion of GRN Rootstocks. He will talk about how these rootstocks are at the cutting edge of efforts to fight the diseases that threaten vineyards.

“Trunk Diseases”

In this episode, Kendra Baumgartner talks about diagnosing trunk diseases and treating them once that diagnosis has been established. Kendra is an adjunct professor at the University of California and a research plant pathologist at the USDA-ARS.

“Canopy Management”

This episode features Kaan Kurtural, an extension specialist at the UC Extension’s experimental station in Oakville, California. Kaan takes an in-depth look at canopy management in vineyards. His focus is on practices that help to optimize crop load, yield efficiency, and sustainability.

“Drought Management”

California has a Mediterranean climate. So even though recent years have been rainy, drought is an ever present concern. In this episode, Associate Professor Megan Bartlett from UC Davis looks at the phenomenon and ways to prepare vineyards to minimize the effect of drought years that certainly lie ahead.

“Smoke Taint”

This is a one-hour, highly technical exploration of the impact of smoke on grapes and wine. The participants, who took part in a forum held in Lake County in the spring of 2019, include Glenn McGourty, Dr. Anita Oberholster, and Dr. Michael Jones of the UC Cooperative Extension.
