Location
Round Mountain/High Valley, is another of Lake County's high elevation growing areas. Above the northeast shores of Clearlake in Lake County, this distinct growing area is defined by step mountain ridges, which rise directly from the valley floor at 1,700 feet above sea level to heights in excess of 3,000 feet.
Approximately 9 miles long and three miles wide, this rare east-west traverse in the Californian coastal range was created by volcanic activity of Round Mountain. Of Round Mountain/High Valley's 15,000 acres, approximately 700 acres of vineyard are currently planted.
Soils
The distinct watershed boundaries mean that soils found within High Valley area are derived only from parent material found within the basin. For the vineyards in this area, these include brick-red volcanic cinders and pumice-like gravel and stones. Like many great wine growing areas, these soils provide superior drainage. Chemical analysis of the soils reveal excellent characteristics for winegrape growing.
Elevation

Weather
With its cool lake winds and steep volcanic soils, the High Valley Round Mountain consistently produced small concentrated fully ripened berries. Additionally the elevation along with the cooling effects of Clear Lake create a natural and perpetual "wind machine." During July and August daily temperatures swings of 60-70 degrees are not uncommon. This intense cooling effect produces better acidities, improved tanning structure, darker color and more concentrated fruit character.

The High Valley Round Mountain areas of Lake County have attracted innovative growers who are well versed in developing mountain vineyards and are respected in other areas and are passionate about quality. Significant vineyards in the area include, Brassfield Estate, Monte Lago, and Shannon Ridge. These growers are leaders in stainable winegrowing efforts.
Product
While the area has become known for intense, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, the Zinfandel has become highly sought after fruit. With its cool lake winds and steep volcanic soils, the High Valley Round Mountain consistently produced small concentrated fully ripened berries. Fruit from this region has become highly prized by a number of Napa and Sonoma based wineries.
